Out Run

Introduction

Out Run was developed and published by Sega, released in arcades in 1986 under the direction of Yu Suzuki, who had previously worked on Sega’s earlier hit Hang-On. Players take the wheel of a red Ferrari Testarossa Spider convertible, racing against the clock through scenic checkpoint stages rather than against other cars, with a girlfriend riding along as the copilot. What set Out Run apart was its branching road structure: at the end of each stage, players chose between diverging paths, leading to one of several different route combinations and five distinct endings depending on the choices made along the way. The game’s pseudo-3D graphics, achieved through Sega’s Super Scaler hardware, created a genuine sense of speed and depth rarely seen in racing games of the period, while its arcade cabinet, especially the deluxe sit-down version with hydraulic motion, added a physical thrill to match the visuals. Composer Hiroshi Kawaguchi’s soundtrack, including the now-iconic “Magical Sound Shower,” became just as celebrated as the gameplay itself, helping make Out Run one of the most beloved and influential arcade racers ever made.
