Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors was developed and published by Capcom on CPS-2 arcade hardware, released in Japan in July 1994 as the first entry in the Darkstalkers fighting game series. Set apart from Capcom’s already-established Street Fighter series by its horror movie monster theme, the game’s roster includes the succubus Morrigan Aensland, the Frankenstein’s monster-inspired Victor von Gerdenheim, the werewolf Jon Talbain, and the mummy Anakaris, each fighting with wildly different movesets built around their monster archetypes rather than traditional martial arts. The game leaned heavily on an air-combo system that let skilled players juggle opponents through extended aerial strings, a mechanic that felt significantly more acrobatic and fast-paced than Street Fighter II’s more grounded combat. Its dark, gothic visual style and genuinely varied cast made it stand out sharply from the wave of Street Fighter II clones flooding arcades at the time. Well received for its distinct identity and technical depth, Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors launched a series that would continue through several increasingly refined sequels, including Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge the following year.
