The Goonies II

Introduction

The Goonies II was developed and published by Konami, released for the NES in 1987 as a loose sequel to the arcade platformer The Goonies, itself based on the 1985 film. Rather than repeating the arcade original’s stage-based action, The Goonies II restructures the series into a Metroidvania-style adventure, sending Mikey through a large interconnected mansion and cave complex to rescue his kidnapped friends from the Fratelli family. Progress depends on finding items like a boomerang, a hammer, and roller skates that open previously inaccessible areas, alongside conversations with hostages who give cryptic hints toward the next objective. Its exploration-driven structure was unusual for a licensed movie tie-in of its era, drawing more from Metroid and Zelda than from typical film adaptations, and it has since been reassessed by retro fans as one of the stronger examples of the NES’s early open-ended action-adventure design.
