Illusion of Gaia was developed by Quintet and published by Enix, released for the SNES in 1993 as an action-adventure following a young boy named Will who can transform into two other forms, the powerful Freedan and the healer Shadow, each suited to different combat and puzzle situations. The game sends players on a real-world tour of famous ancient sites, from the Great Pyramid to the Nazca Lines, reframing them as stops on a mystical journey tied to a comet passing over Earth. Combat unfolds in real time across open dungeon areas rather than a menu-driven battle system, with each of Will’s forms offering a different weapon range and special ability. Though it sold modestly on release, Illusion of Gaia earned a lasting cult following for its melancholic tone, ambitious scope, and place alongside Quintet’s other Enix-published SNES titles, Soul Blazer and Terranigma, in what fans now call the studio’s unofficial Gaia trilogy.
