Dragon Warrior is the North American localization of Dragon Quest, developed by Chunsoft under creator Yuji Horii and published by Enix, with character art from Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama and a soundtrack by Koichi Sugiyama, originally released for the Famicom in Japan in May 1986 before Nintendo brought a visually updated version to the NES in North America in August 1989. The Western name change was purely a legal workaround, avoiding a trademark clash with the existing pen-and-paper game DragonQuest, and the American version also swapped the original’s cumbersome kana-character passwords for a battery-backed save feature. Horii built the game by blending the overhead exploration of Ultima with the first-person, menu-driven random encounters of Wizardry, distilling both into something far more approachable, and in doing so effectively created the template for the entire Japanese RPG genre. Players control a lone hero descended from the legendary Erdrick, wandering the kingdom of Alefgard, leveling up through turn-based battles, buying better gear in town, and following clues toward rescuing a princess and ultimately confronting the Dragonlord, all through a structure that would go on to directly shape everything from Final Fantasy to countless JRPGs that followed.
