Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game was released by Konami for the NES in 1990, bringing the hit 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade machine to the console. The Shredder and the Foot Clan have kidnapped April O’Neil and Splinter, and Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael must fight through burning buildings, city streets, a skateboarding stage and the Technodrome to save them. Each turtle uses his own weapon, and players can perform jump attacks and throw Foot Soldiers. Pizza restores health along the way. To make up for the hardware gap, the NES version adds extra stages and bosses that were not in the arcade game. Two players can play together at the same time, one of the main reasons for its popularity. It was a major success on the NES and helped make Konami’s Turtles games a staple of the beat ’em up genre.
