Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire

Introduction

Koei brought the fourth entry in its long-running Romance of the Three Kingdoms series to the Super Famicom on 9 December 1994, with the North American release following in July 1995 as Wall of Fire. Players take command of a warlord in the collapsing Han empire and manage everything a province needs: farmland and floodworks, tax rates, troop training, weapon stockpiles and the morale of a population that will revolt if squeezed too hard. The real currency of the game is people. Hundreds of historical officers are modelled with their own war, intelligence, politics and charisma ratings, and recruiting, promoting, marrying off or imprisoning them matters as much as any battle. When war does come, sieges and field battles play out on hex maps where fire attacks, ambushes, weather and supply lines decide outcomes more often than raw troop counts. Several starting scenarios spread across the era let players replay the period from very different positions.
