Hudson Soft released Super Bomberman for the Super Nintendo in 1993, the first Bomberman game on the console and the one that turned the series into a party staple. In the story mode, White Bomberman and Black Bomberman team up to stop the villains Carat Diamond and Dr. Mook, whose army of robotic bombers is threatening Diamond City, and two players can clear the stages together. Each level is a grid of destructible blocks and enemies, and the player drops bombs to blast a path, uncover power-ups and trap monsters in the crossfire. Fire, bomb, speed and kick upgrades change how aggressively a player can play. The real star is Battle Mode, where up to four players try to be the last Bomberman standing using Hudson’s Super Multitap accessory, which was released alongside the game. Fast, chaotic and easy to learn, it became one of the most popular multiplayer games of the 16-bit era.
