Battletoads in Battlemaniacs

Introduction

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs was developed by Rare and published by Tradewest, released for the SNES in 1993 as a reworked version of the original NES Battletoads, redesigned with new stages and a toned-down difficulty curve compared to its infamously punishing predecessor. Players once again control Rash and Zitz, mutant toad heroes, fighting and platforming through psychedelic sci-fi stages to rescue Princess Angelica from the Dark Queen, using an arsenal of comically oversized transforming limbs for combat and battling through the same wildly varied stage gimmicks, including a version of the original’s notorious speeder bike sequence, that defined the series’ reputation. While still challenging by SNES platformer standards, it was noticeably more forgiving than the original Battletoads, a deliberate response to widespread complaints about that game’s brutal difficulty spikes. Well received for translating the series’ irreverent humor and inventive stage variety to a new console without the same reputation for unfairness, Battlemaniacs remains one of the more accessible entry points into the Battletoads series.
