Demon’s Crest was developed and published by Capcom, released for the SNES in 1994 as a spin-off of the Ghosts ‘n Goblins series starring the gargoyle Firebrand, previously a recurring enemy in that franchise. Players explore a nonlinear world map searching for six elemental Crests that grant new powers and transformations, from a heavier armored form built for tanking damage to a flight-capable form suited for aerial exploration, with each Crest opening up previously inaccessible areas in classic Metroidvania fashion. Its gothic horror art direction and moody, atmospheric soundtrack set it apart from the more overtly comedic tone of its parent series, while its punishing difficulty and dense, interconnected level design carried over Ghosts ‘n Goblins’ reputation for challenge. Commercially overlooked at release, Demon’s Crest has since been reassessed as one of the SNES’s best action-platformers and one of Capcom’s most underrated 16-bit efforts.
