Harvest Moon

Introduction

Harvest Moon was developed by Pack-In-Video and published by Natsume, released for the SNES in 1996 as the game that introduced farming simulation to a wide console audience. Players inherit a run-down farm and must plant and harvest crops, raise livestock, and build relationships with neighboring townsfolk across an in-game calendar of days and seasons, with the eventual goal of restoring the farm to prosperity and finding a spouse to settle down with. Its low-pressure, self-directed structure was a sharp departure from the action and platforming that dominated the SNES library, letting players set their own pace rather than chase a fixed objective. Modestly received at launch, it went on to spawn one of gaming’s longest-running simulation franchises, and this original SNES entry is now recognized as the foundation for an entire genre of life and farming sims that followed.
