Tetris & Dr. Mario

Introduction

Tetris & Dr. Mario was published by Nintendo, released for the SNES in 1994 as a two-in-one compilation cartridge bundling enhanced remakes of both Tetris and Dr. Mario onto a single cart. Each game received a genuine visual and mechanical refresh over their earlier NES and Game Boy incarnations, with the Tetris side offering the series’ familiar block-stacking line-clearing gameplay and Dr. Mario retaining its pill-dropping, virus-clearing puzzle format starring the Mushroom Kingdom’s plumber-turned-doctor. Beyond simply packaging the two games side by side, the cartridge included a distinctive “Mixed Match” mode that seamlessly alternated between Tetris and Dr. Mario as players progressed through a combined difficulty curve, cycling from Tetris’s B-Type mode into Dr. Mario, then into Tetris’s A-Type mode, and so on, creating a genuinely blended puzzle experience rather than two separate games loosely bundled together. Its combination of two already-beloved puzzle formulas with a novel crossover mode made it a popular budget-friendly puzzle compilation, and it remains a fondly remembered entry among SNES puzzle-game collectors.
