Another World

Introduction

Another World, released in North America as Out of This World, was designed by Éric Chahi and published by Delphine Software International, originally released for the Amiga and other home computers in November 1991 before reaching the Genesis in 1993. The game follows physicist Lester Knight Chaykin, transported to a hostile alien world after a laboratory experiment goes catastrophically wrong, as he fights and puzzles his way through a series of cinematic set-piece encounters using rotoscoped animation and a distinctive polygon-based art style that gave the game a strikingly fluid, film-like quality rarely seen in games of its era. Rather than traditional lives or a score, the game unfolds as a continuous sequence of trial-and-error puzzle and action sequences, often demanding precise timing and pattern memorization to survive its unforgiving, largely silent narrative told through visual storytelling rather than dialogue or text. Its cinematic presentation and unconventional, almost wordless approach to storytelling made Another World hugely influential on the adventure and cinematic-platformer genres that followed, and it remains widely regarded as one of the most artistically significant games of the early 1990s.
