Rock n’ Roll Racing

Introduction

Rock n’ Roll Racing was developed by Silicon & Synapse, the studio that would soon become Blizzard Entertainment, and published by Interplay for the SNES in 1993. The game pits up to four players against each other in isometric combat racing across alien worlds, arming vehicles with machine guns, mines, and homing missiles alongside pure speed. Its irreverent tone set it apart immediately: a fast-talking announcer hypes every race, and the soundtrack licenses instrumental covers of classic rock tracks like Deep Purple’s Highway Star and Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, unusual for a console game of its era. Between races, winnings can be spent upgrading engines, armor, and weapons, adding a light strategic layer to its short, chaotic circuits. Its blend of vehicular combat and music-driven personality made it a cult favorite, later spawning spiritual successors at Blizzard itself.
