Excitebike

Introduction

Excitebike was developed by Nintendo, directed and designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, and released in Japan in November 1984, with a North American NES release following in October 1985 as one of the console’s early best-selling titles. It introduced a handful of mechanics that were unusually sophisticated for the time, including a motorcycle engine-heat gauge that forces players to manage turbo boosts carefully rather than holding them down constantly, and genuine terrain deformation as bikes land on and reshape dirt jumps mid-race. Its Design Mode let players build and save their own custom tracks by placing ramps, jumps, and obstacles, making it one of the earliest console games to hand players a real level editor rather than just fixed content. Players race solo against the clock or against a field of rival racers across increasingly demanding dirt-bike tracks, balancing speed, jump timing, and heat management to avoid crashing or overheating before the finish line, in a formula simple enough to pick up instantly but with real depth for players chasing better times.
