Bubble Bobble

Introduction

Bubble Bobble was developed and published by Taito, released in arcades in 1986 under the direction of Fukio “MTJ” Mihara. The game follows Bub and Bob, two friends transformed into bubble-blowing dragons, as they climb through 100 single-screen levels trying to rescue their girlfriends and reverse the curse turning them into monsters. Rather than shooting or fighting directly, players trap enemies inside floating bubbles and then pop them by bumping into them, a distinctive mechanic that turned the game into as much a puzzle-platformer as an action title. Cooperative two-player play let a second dragon join at any time, and hidden “extend” letters scattered through certain levels spelled out bonus words that unlocked extra lives, encouraging repeat playthroughs to find every secret. Its bright, cartoonish visuals paired with an unusually catchy, high-energy soundtrack helped it stand out from the more serious shooters dominating arcades at the time, and its branching multiple endings depending on how the game was completed gave it lasting replay value that built a devoted, long-running fanbase.
