Super Dodge Ball was developed and published by Technos Japan, directed by Mitsuhiro Yoshida with design work by Koji Ogata, loosely adapting the studio’s own 1987 arcade game of the same name and serving as the second entry in the Kunio-kun series even though that connection was scrubbed from international releases. It launched in Japan in July 1988 and reached North America the following June through publisher CSG Imagesoft, with an enhanced Famicom-exclusive version adding named players with individual stats, unique ground and aerial super shots per character, and two extra national teams, India and the USSR, that never made it into the Western cartridge. Players field a team in fast-paced, exaggerated dodgeball matches against international rivals, throwing and catching balls at high speed, pulling off cartoonishly powerful special throws, and knocking opposing players out of bounds in matches that play more like an arcade brawler than an actual sports simulation. Its blend of sports rules with over-the-top character abilities made it a standout multiplayer favorite on the NES, and its influence carried on through later Kunio-kun games even after original developer Technos Japan eventually went out of business.
