Whip Rush 2222 A.D.

Introduction

Whip Rush 2222 A.D. is a horizontally and vertically scrolling shooter developed by Vic Tokai for the Sega Genesis, published by Sega in Japan on May 26, 1990 and by Renovation Products in North America that October. Set in the 22nd century after humanity has exhausted the Solar System’s resources, the story follows three robotic scout ships sent to find new worlds; after they discover the planet Voltegeus and go silent, an alien fleet attacks Earth, leaving the small but powerful starfighter Whip Rush to fight off the invasion and uncover what happened to the missing colony ships. Players alternate between horizontal and vertical scrolling stages, collecting pod-based weapon upgrades that attach to the ship and can be repositioned for different firing angles. Whip Rush’s blend of a fairly involved sci-fi plot with straightforward shooting action made it a notable, if lesser-known, entry in the Genesis’s early shooter lineup.
