Insector X

Introduction

Insector X began life as an arcade shooter developed by Hot-B under contract for Taito, released to arcades in 1989 with a deliberately comical tone that Taito had requested. After buying the rights back from Taito the following year, Hot-B built its own Mega Drive version, published in Japan under its own name and in North America by Sage’s Creation, this time closer to the studio’s original vision: more realistic sprite work, an entirely new soundtrack, and a reworked secondary-weapon system. Players control an insect-themed starfighter blasting through waves of bio-mechanical enemies and bosses across a vertically scrolling campaign, swapping between a handful of collectible sub-weapons to handle different threats. Though a relatively obscure release compared to other Genesis shooters of its era, Insector X is remembered as an unusually direct case of a developer reclaiming and revising its own arcade game for the home market.
