Mortal Kombat

Introduction

Mortal Kombat arrived in arcades in 1992 from Midway, and Acclaim brought it to the Genesis in 1993 with a huge marketing campaign. Seven fighters – Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kano, Raiden, Scorpion and Sub-Zero – enter a tournament run by the sorcerer Shang Tsung, with the four-armed Goro as the champion they must defeat. The game used digitized photographs of real actors for its characters, giving it a look unlike any other fighting game of the time. Each fighter has special moves, and winners can perform a Fatality, a brutal finishing move, at the end of a match. A hidden character, Reptile, can be found under specific conditions. The Genesis version initially hid the blood behind a secret code, which became famous among players, while the Super Nintendo version removed it entirely. The game’s violence led to public debate and played a role in the creation of age ratings for video games.
