Sega released Alex Kidd in Miracle World for the Master System in 1986, and the character served as Sega’s mascot until Sonic arrived. Alex, a young martial artist from the planet Aries, sets out to free the kingdom of Radaxian from the tyrant Janken the Great. He punches his way through rocks and enemies with an oversized fist, collects money bags to spend in shops, and switches between vehicles such as a motorcycle, a pedal-powered helicopter called the Peticopter and a small boat. The most memorable encounters are the boss battles, many of which are games of rock-paper-scissors in which the loser is punished. Stages vary from mountainsides and underwater levels to castles full of traps. The game was later built into the memory of the Master System II, which made it the first game many European and Brazilian players ever played.
