Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder was originally developed by Westwood Studios for PC in 1991 before Capcom published a SNES port in 1994, adapting the first-person dungeon crawler built on TSR’s Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. Players create and control a party of adventurers exploring the sewers and dungeons beneath the city of Waterdeep in real time, navigating grid-based corridors rendered in first-person while managing spell slots, inventory weight, and turn-based-feeling combat against a growing bestiary of D&D monsters. Its faithful adaptation of AD&D’s character classes, races, and spellcasting systems gave it a level of tabletop authenticity uncommon in console RPGs of the era, though the console port required simplifying some of the PC original’s more granular interface for controller input. Bringing a genuine PC-style dungeon crawler to the SNES was a significant technical undertaking, and while it never reached the mainstream popularity of Capcom’s other SNES output, it remains notable among RPG fans as one of the more authentic Dungeons & Dragons adaptations on a Nintendo console.
