A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia

Introduction

A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia was developed by Absolute Entertainment and published by Konami’s overseas arm INTV, released for the NES in 1989 as a puzzle-platformer built around a unique companion mechanic rather than combat. Players control a young boy who can feed different flavored jellybeans to his shapeshifting alien companion, the Blob, transforming it into tools like a trampoline, an umbrella, or a ladder needed to solve each screen’s specific puzzle and progress toward liberating the Blob’s home planet from a tyrant. Its emphasis on experimentation, figuring out which jellybean flavor produces the transformation needed for a given obstacle, gave it a genuinely different rhythm from the action-focused platformers that dominated the NES library. Despite unforgiving trial-and-error difficulty that drew criticism at release, it has become a beloved cult classic for its charm and inventive core mechanic, well-regarded enough to receive a full remake decades later on modern consoles.
