Breath of Fire II

Introduction

Breath of Fire II was developed and published by Capcom, released for the SNES in 1995 as a direct sequel following a new protagonist, also named Ryu, generations after the events of the first game, once again wielding dragon transformation powers passed down through his bloodline. It expanded on its predecessor with a party-based Shaman system that let characters fuse with elemental spirits for combat bonuses, a deeper crafting and item system, and a notably darker storyline dealing with organized religion and corruption that stood out from more typical JRPG fantasy plots of the time. Its English localization was famously rushed and rough around the edges, something later fan patches and retrospectives have specifically called out, but the underlying game beneath the translation issues was well regarded for its ambition and mechanical depth. It remains a cult favorite among SNES RPG fans, often discussed alongside the original as a high point of Capcom’s early RPG output before the series moved to PlayStation.
