Road Rash

Introduction

Road Rash was developed and published by Electronic Arts, released for the Genesis in 1991 as a motorcycle racing game built around a distinctive combination of speed and violence rarely attempted in the genre before it. Players race a series of illegal street courses through the California countryside, competing against a field of rival bikers who can be punched, kicked, or struck with a stolen weapon like a chain or club while riding alongside them at full speed, turning every race into as much a fight for survival as a contest of pure racing skill. Crashing sent riders tumbling across the road with a real risk of being run over by oncoming traffic, and losing a race outright could mean having a bike repossessed, adding genuine consequence to reckless driving beyond simply finishing last. Its irreverent tone, aggressive combat-racing hybrid, and surprisingly tight controls made it an immediate hit on the Genesis, helping define a distinctly different lane within the racing genre and launching a long-running series of sequels across several console generations that followed.
