Gunbird 2

Introduction

Gunbird 2 was developed by Psikyo and published by Capcom, released in Japanese arcades in 1998 as the sequel to 1994’s Gunbird. The game expanded on the original’s whimsical, character-driven premise with an even larger roster of unusual playable pilots, each again flying their own distinctly themed vehicle and wielding a unique weapon and special attack, continuing the series’ emphasis on personality and variety over the more uniform fighter-plane rosters common in military-themed shooters. Gunbird 2 refined the original’s bullet patterns and stage design with noticeably more polish and visual flair, reflecting Psikyo’s growing technical expertise by the late 1990s, while keeping the accessible, slightly less punishing difficulty curve that had helped the original stand out from denser bullet-hell shooters like the studio’s own later Strikers titles. Its colorful, anime-inspired presentation and genuinely varied character roster made it a well-regarded entry in Psikyo’s catalog, and it remains one of the more fondly remembered character-shooter hybrids from the late-1990s arcade shoot ’em up scene.
