DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm

Introduction

DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm was developed by International Games System and published by Capcom, released in arcades in 2001 as a sequel to Cave’s original DoDonPachi, notably the only entry in the DonPachi series not developed by Cave itself. The game kept the series’ core vertically scrolling bullet-hell shooting intact, tasking players with weaving through dense, elaborate bullet patterns fired by waves of insect-themed enemies and oversized bosses, while introducing a new laser-charging mechanic and adjustments to the scoring system aimed at making the notoriously difficult series slightly more approachable for newer players. Its change in developer was noticeable to longtime fans, who generally regarded its bullet patterns and overall design as less refined and less distinctly stylish than Cave’s own entries in the series, a common point of comparison in retrospective discussions of the game. Despite a more mixed reception than its predecessor, DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm remains a historically notable chapter in the series as the one mainline game that shows how another developer’s interpretation compared to Cave’s original bullet-hell blueprint.
