Shadow of the Ninja

Introduction

Shadow of the Ninja, released in Japan as Kage, was developed and published by Natsume, released on the NES in 1990 as a fast-paced action platformer set in a dystopian near-future America under the rule of the tyrant Emperor Garuda. Players choose between two ninja protagonists, Hayate and Kaede, each armed with a sword for melee strikes and a chain-sickle for ranged attacks, along with a small arsenal of secondary weapons like shuriken and bombs picked up during stages, fighting through heavily armed soldiers, mutants, and mechanical enemies across a resistance-versus-empire storyline. A distinctive double-jump and wall-cling system gave players unusually fluid vertical mobility for an NES platformer, letting skilled players navigate tight, hazard-filled stages with real precision. Its dark, moody visuals, aggressive difficulty, and surprisingly cinematic presentation for its era made it a standout among the NES’s late-life library, and though it never achieved mainstream popularity on release, it has since earned a strong cult following, culminating in an official Natsume-developed remake released decades later.
