Jackal was developed and published by Konami, originally released to arcades in 1986 under the North American title Top Gunner before the NES conversion arrived in September 1988 as a genuine remake rather than a straight port, restructured into six distinct stages instead of the arcade’s single continuous level. Konami renamed the console version to avoid confusion with its own separate Top Gun game adaptation, while the Japanese Famicom Disk System release used yet another title, Final Command: Red Fortress. Players drive a machine-gun-armed jeep through a top-down warzone, gunning down enemy soldiers and vehicles while running over land mines and collecting power-ups, with a core rescue mechanic that has players picking up captured prisoners of war along the way and dropping them off at extraction points for bonus points. Its fast-paced top-down run-and-gun action and simultaneous two-player co-op made it a solid, if lesser-known, entry in Konami’s late-80s action lineup, distinct from the studio’s more famous Contra series releasing around the same time.
