Sub-Terrania

Introduction

Sub-Terrania is a multidirectional shooter developed by the Danish studio Zyrinx and published by Sega for the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1994, notable as the debut project of a team formed from members of two Amiga demoscene groups, The Crionics and The Silents. Set at a future deep-space mining colony overrun by an unknown alien force, the game puts players in control of a lone rescue pilot whose small craft must be rotated and thrust around a gravity-affected, physics-driven landscape in the spirit of arcade classics like Gravitar and Thrust, all while balancing fuel and hostage rescues against constant enemy fire. Zyrinx famously built their own custom development hardware rather than using Sega’s official kit, which let composer Jesper Kyd — later known for the Hitman series — push the Genesis sound chip to a then-unusual 44kHz output instead of the console’s standard 11kHz. The game’s commercial success gave Zyrinx the opportunity to relocate and continue as an internal team at the American publisher Scavenger, Inc.
