Galaxy Force II

Introduction

Galaxy Force II is a sprite-scaling rail shooter developed by Sega R&D1, an expanded update of 1988’s arcade original Galaxy Force built on Sega’s sprite-scaling Y Board hardware, adding two new levels and other refinements shortly after that first release. The Mega Drive/Genesis version arrived in 1990 as part of a wide multi-platform rollout of the game that also touched the Master System, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, and several other home systems. Players pilot a starfighter through a set sequence of into-the-screen combat stages, weaving past enemy fire and obstacles while blasting through waves of ships and turrets. The Genesis conversion was an ambitious attempt at a faithful arcade port, though the console’s more limited hardware forced simplified graphics and altered frame pacing compared to the original cabinet experience.
