Snow Bros. was created by Toaplan as a 1990 arcade game and brought to the NES in 1991, with Capcom handling publishing duties for the home release. Players control Nick and Tom, two snowmen on a mission to rescue a pair of princesses from a demon king, and the core idea is simple but endlessly satisfying: pelt an enemy with snow until it is completely frozen into a giant snowball, then kick that snowball so it rolls across the screen, bouncing off walls and flattening every other monster in its path. Clearing a floor with a single well-aimed roll showers the stage with bonus items, and coloured potions boost speed, shot power or range. Each floor fits on a single screen, bosses guard every tenth level, and two players can cooperate at the same time. The NES version is one of the rarer and more sought-after cartridges on the system, which has helped keep its reputation as one of the best single-screen action games of its generation.
