Donkey Kong Classics

Introduction

Donkey Kong Classics was developed and published by Nintendo, released for the NES in 1988 as a two-in-one compilation bundling faithful home ports of the original 1981 arcade Donkey Kong alongside its 1982 sequel Donkey Kong Jr. Rather than adding new content, the compilation’s value was in preserving both arcade classics accurately on a single NES cartridge at a point when the originals were becoming harder to find outside dedicated arcade cabinets. The first game casts players as Mario, or Jumpman as he was known at the time, climbing construction site platforms to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong, while the sequel flips the perspective, having Donkey Kong Jr. navigate jungle vines and electrified obstacles to rescue his captured father. As one of Nintendo’s earliest compilation releases, it offered an accessible, budget-friendly way for NES owners to experience two foundational platformers from the earliest days of the company’s arcade output.
