Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Introduction

Zombies Ate My Neighbors was developed by LucasArts and published by Konami, released for the SNES in 1993 as a top-down run-and-gun that parodies decades of horror movie tropes rather than any single film. Playing as one of two suburban teenagers, Zeke or Julie, players race against the clock through each level to rescue a set list of terrified neighbors before they are caught by chainsaw-wielding maniacs, giant ants, alien pod people, and dozens of other monster types, using household items like water pistols, weed whackers, and soda cans as improvised weapons. Its two-player simultaneous co-op mode and dark comedic tone, punishing but rarely gory, made it stand out among the SNES’s more straightforward action library, and its 55 varied levels rewarded repeat playthroughs with new monster combinations. Despite a lukewarm commercial reception tied partly to publisher confusion over its marketing, it has become one of the most fondly remembered cult classics of the 16-bit era, later receiving an HD remaster.
