Rad Racer II was developed and published by Square, released for the NES in 1990 as a sequel to Rad Racer. It follows the same pseudo-3D racing format as the original, sending players down a fixed set of named courses against the clock and rival traffic, but drops the original’s stereoscopic 3D glasses gimmick in favor of a more conventional presentation. New to the sequel is a course editor, letting players lay out their own tracks by placing curves and hazards before racing them, an unusually creative feature for an NES racer. It arrived late in the NES’s commercial life and sold modestly compared to its predecessor, overshadowed by the SNES’s launch the following year, but its course editor has made it a minor point of interest for retro racing fans looking past the more famous Rad Racer.
