Donkey Kong Country

Introduction

Donkey Kong Country was developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, released on the SNES in November 1994 as a platformer built around Rare’s then-groundbreaking use of pre-rendered 3D CGI models compressed down into detailed 2D sprites, giving the game a visual polish that stood out sharply from most of its contemporaries. Players control Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong, working together (or with a second player controlling one of them) to reclaim their stolen banana hoard from the crocodile-led Kremling Krew across jungles, mines, factories, and icy caverns, riding animal companions like Rambi the rhino and Enguarde the swordfish for stage-specific abilities along the way. Its tight, momentum-based platforming combined with a genuinely varied roster of environments and a memorable David Wise soundtrack made it a massive commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling games on the SNES. Donkey Kong Country’s technical showcase and polished design directly launched a long-running Rare-developed trilogy and helped extend the SNES’s commercial life well into the era of newer 32-bit consoles.
