Mappy was created by Namco for arcades in 1983 and brought to the Famicom the following year. The player controls Mappy, a police mouse, who must recover stolen goods from a mansion owned by a gang of cats called the Meowkies and their leader, Goro. The mansion is built across several floors, and Mappy moves between them by bouncing on trampolines, which break if he jumps on them too many times in a row. Doors add strategy: Mappy can open them to knock out cats, and special microwave doors send a wave across the floor that sweeps away every cat it touches. Items such as televisions, computers, paintings and safes appear in pairs, and collecting matching items earns bonus points. Bonus rounds involve popping balloons. Easy to learn but tough to master, Mappy was one of Namco’s most popular early games.
