Langrisser was developed by NCS and Masaya, released for the Sega Genesis in 1991 as the first entry in a long-running tactical RPG series built around large-scale unit-based battles rather than individual character movement. Players command a general who leads squads of soldiers, knights, archers, and mages across grid-based battlefields, with each unit’s effectiveness shaped by class matchups, terrain, and the commanding officer’s own stats and magic. Branching story paths let players side with different factions as the campaign progresses, changing which battles and endings become available on a given playthrough. Never localized outside Japan on the Genesis, Langrisser built a cult following through fan translations long before later entries reached the West officially, and it is widely credited alongside contemporaries like Fire Emblem for shaping the tactical RPG genre on consoles.
